Beat the Heat 

As the summer sun beats down, why not turn up the fun with some cool science experiments? Engage your curiosity and creativity with these hands-on projects designed to beat the heat while exploring the fascinating world of science.

DIY Solar-Powered Oven:

Harness the power of the sun to cook delicious snacks with your very own solar-powered oven. This project combines elements of engineering, physics, and environmental science to create a sustainable and exciting cooking experience.

Materials Needed:

• Cardboard box with a lid
• Aluminum foil
• Clear plastic wrap
• Black construction paper
• Tape
• Scissors
• Oven-safe dish

Instructions:

1. Cut a flap into the top of the cardboard box to create a lid.
2. Line the inside of the box, including the lid flap, with aluminum foil, shiny side facing inward.
3. Cover the opening of the box with clear plastic wrap and secure it in place with tape.
4. Line the bottom of the box with black construction paper to absorb heat.
5. Place your oven-safe dish filled with food inside the box.
6. Position the solar oven in direct sunlight, ensuring that the plastic wrap faces the sun.
7. Wait for the sun's rays to heat up your solar oven and cook your food to perfection!

Experiment:

Try cooking different foods in your solar oven and compare the cooking times and results. How does the type of food and the angle of the sun affect the cooking process?

DIY Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag:

Cool off on a hot summer day with this delicious and educational experiment that explores the science of freezing point depression. With just a few simple ingredients and some basic kitchen supplies, you can whip up your own batch of creamy homemade ice cream in a matter of minutes.

Materials Needed:

• Quart-sized resealable plastic bag
• Gallon-sized resealable plastic bag
• Ice cubes
• Rock salt
• Heavy cream
• Sugar
• Vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. In the quart-sized plastic bag, mix together 1 cup of heavy cream, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
2. Seal the bag tightly, removing as much air as possible.
3. Fill the gallon-sized plastic bag halfway with ice cubes and add 1/4 cup of rock salt.
4. Place the sealed quart-sized bag containing the ice cream mixture into the larger bag with the ice and salt.
5. Seal the larger bag tightly, ensuring that no salt or ice leaks out.
6. Shake the bags vigorously for 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture thickens into ice cream.
7. Carefully remove the smaller bag from the larger bag, wipe off any salt residue, and enjoy your homemade ice cream straight from the bag!
